How to Secure a Marquee: The Ultimate Guide to Anchoring and Wind-Proofing

A marquee is essentially a large sail. Even on a seemingly calm day, a sudden gust of wind can create immense lifting force. Ensuring your marquee is correctly anchored isn’t just about protecting your equipment; it’s about the safety of your guests.

Whether you are pitching on soft grass or a hard standing, here is the DIY Marquees gold standard for securing your structure.

1. The Primary Defense: Tie-Down Kits

For most standard setups on grass, a Tie-Down Kit is your first line of defence. We recommend one kit per leg.

• The Math: For a 4m x 8m marquee, you have 5 legs down each side. That means you need 10 stakes and 10 ratchet straps.
• The Strength: A properly driven stake in soft ground provides approximately 100kg of holding force per leg.
• The Technique: Attach the ratchet strap to the eave rail (where the leg meets the roof) and anchor the stake into the ground at a 45-degree angle, roughly 1 meter away from the marquee.

2. The “Storm Mode”: Over-the-Top Straps

If the forecast looks dicey or you are in an exposed location, tie-down kits alone may not be enough. To prevent the PVC from “slapping” against the frame or lifting, you should use Over-Straps.

• The Gear: We use heavy-duty 15m x 50mm lorry straps and massive 900mm long stakes.
• The Application: These straps go completely over the roof of the marquee, pinning the PVC and the frame to the earth.
• The Power: Our testing shows these 900mm stakes are incredibly resilient; even in wet ground, they only begin to move at a staggering 275kg of pull force.

Pro Tip: Over-straps should ideally be used in conjunction with your standard tie-down kits, not as a replacement.

3. Anchoring on Hard Surfaces

When you can’t drive a stake into the ground (like on a driveway or car park), you have to provide that 100kg of downward force per leg through weight or mechanical fixing.

The “Ton Bag” Method (Highly Recommended)

One of the most cost-effective and logical ways to anchor a large marquee on a hard surface is using Ton Bags of materials like shingle or sand.

• Ease of Use: Place the bag on a pallet and move it into position with a pallet truck.
• Securing: The handles on these bags are incredibly strong—simply loop your ratchet straps through them.
• Recyclable Cost: Unlike bespoke concrete weights, the sand or shingle can be sold or used for a landscaping project after the event.

Water Butts and Concrete

Water butts are portable when empty and heavy when full, making them a favorite for DIYers. However, ensure the butt is rated for the weight required (remember: 1 liter of water = 1kg). Large concrete blocks are also an option if you have the means to move them.

Drill and Bolt

For a semi-permanent installation on concrete, using an SDS drill to install eye-bolts directly into the ground is the most secure method. You can then attach your ratchet straps directly to the bolts.
