Keeping it Cool: The Ultimate Marquee Heatwave Guide

Summer is the peak season for weddings, garden parties, festivals, and corporate events. There’s nothing quite like the atmosphere of an outdoor celebration under a beautiful marquee when the sun is shining.

However, as British summers continue to break records, a heatwave can quickly turn a beautiful marquee into an uncomfortable greenhouse if you aren’t prepared.

Whether you run a marquee hire business or you’ve purchased a DIY Marquee for your own venue, keeping your structures cool, safe, and comfortable during a heatwave is essential. Here is our ultimate guide to managing a marquee when the mercury rises.

1. Master the Airflow (The Cross-Ventilation Trick)

The single most effective way to cool a marquee without electricity is through smart airflow.

  • Create a cross-breeze: Don’t just open one side of the marquee. Open the side facing the wind and the exact opposite side. This creates a natural wind tunnel that pulls hot air out and draws cooler air in. However, be careful. Marquees should be anchored down with tie-down kits in windy conditions and opening sides can cause “lift” like an aeroplane wing
  • Utilize removable wall panels: One of the best features of DIY Marquees is our interchangeable, easy-to-remove side panels. During the hottest parts of the day, consider removing the side walls completely on the shaded side of the structure to maximize ventilation.
  • The “Chimney Effect”: If your marquee has unzippable end panels or doors, leave the tops of them slightly open. Because hot air rises, giving it an escape route at the highest possible point prevents heat from getting trapped in the roof space.

2. Strategic Positioning and Shade

If you have flexibility in where you pitch the marquee, use the landscape to your advantage:

  • Natural Shade: Position the marquee near large trees or buildings that will cast shade during the hottest hours of the day (usually between 12 PM and 4 PM). Just ensure there are no low-hanging dead branches that could pose a safety hazard.
  • Orientation: If possible, angle the marquee so that the main entrance or the side where guests will gather faces away from the direct afternoon sun.

3. Invest in the Right Hardware: Fans & Evaporative Coolers

When passive ventilation isn’t enough, it’s time to bring in mechanical help.

  • Pedestal and Drum Fans: Large, commercial-grade floor fans or pedestal fans placed in the corners can keep air moving. For maximum comfort, aim them at knee/waist height rather than directly at people’s faces or dining tables (to prevent napkins and decorations from flying away).
  • Evaporative Coolers (Swamp Coolers): Unlike standard air conditioning units—which require an airtight space to work efficiently—evaporative coolers are perfect for marquees. They work by pulling hot air through wet cooling pads, instantly dropping the temperature of the air they blow out. They work incredibly well even with the marquee walls wide open.

4. Direct Sun vs. PVC: Why Quality Matters

In a heatwave, the material of your marquee makes a massive difference. Cheap, thin plastic covers absorb heat and rapidly create a stifling “greenhouse effect” inside.

At DIY Marquees, our commercial-grade, heavy-duty PVC covers are designed to withstand the elements.

  • UV Resistance: High-quality PVC reflects a significant portion of solar radiation rather than absorbing it.
  • Structural Integrity: Extreme heat can cause cheap plastics to stretch, sag, or emit an unpleasant chemical smell. Our robust marquee covers maintain their tautness, shape, and structural integrity even under intense summer sun.

5. Hydration and Guest Comfort Stations

If you are hosting an event, keeping guests cool involves more than just the structure itself. Encourage your clients or event planners to set up:

  • Hydration Stations: Position self-service water dispensers with plenty of ice, mint, and lemon right near the marquee entrances.
  • Chill-Out Zones: Use a smaller marquee or a canopy attached to the main structure strictly as a shaded “chill-out” area with comfortable seating away from the main dance floor or dining tables.
  • Keep Flooring in Mind: If you are using plastic or dark-coloured flooring, remember it can absorb heat and warm up the marquee from the ground up. Opt for lighter-coloured carpets or natural coconut matting (coir) which stays much cooler underfoot.

6. Health & Safety: Protecting the Setup Crew

A heatwave isn’t just tough on the guests; it’s tough on the people erecting the marquee. If you are a marquee hire company, look after your crew:

  • Shift the Hours: Start setups as early in the morning as possible to get the heavy lifting done before the midday peak.
  • Hydration & Sunscreen: Ensure the team has access to endless cold water and mandatory sunscreen breaks.
  • Handle Tools with Care: Metal ground pegs, framework, and tools left out in the direct sun can become hot enough to burn bare skin. Keep tools in the shade when not in use and wear protective gloves.

Summary

A summer heatwave doesn’t have to ruin an outdoor event. With a high-quality DIY Marquee, a clever ventilation strategy, and a few well-placed fans, your marquee can remain a cool, shady oasis for guests to enjoy all day and night.
