Marquee Seating Capacity Guide: How Many People Can Fit?

When planning an event, understanding how to calculate seating is the difference between a cramped party and a comfortable, professional-looking occasion. At DIY Marquees, we’ve refined the math of marquee layout to help you maximize your space effectively.

Here is a guide on how to calculate the capacity of your marquee based on different seating styles.

1. The Gold Standard: Round Tables

For formal dining, 5.6ft round tables are the industry standard for efficiency.

  • The Math: A 5.6ft table fits perfectly within a 3m x 3m (9m²) square of space. This allows enough room for the table itself and for 10 guests to sit comfortably without their chairs clashing with the next table.
  • Capacity: 10 people per 3m x 3m section.
  • Standing Rule: If you are transitioning from a seated dinner to a standing reception, you can estimate capacity at 1.5x the seated number (approx. 15 people per 3m x 3m area).

2. Trestle Tables: Informal & Linear

Trestle tables are popular for a “banquet” or communal feel, but they are surprisingly less space-efficient than rounds because of the access required.

  • The Math: A standard 6ft trestle table (seating 6 people) requires a footprint of roughly 2m x 3m.
  • Why? Unlike rounds, where chairs angle away from each other, trestle seating is parallel. You must account for the depth of the chairs and a “service corridor” behind them so guests can reach their seats without others having to stand up.

3. Theatre Style: Maximum Density

If your marquee is for a presentation, ceremony, or speech, theatre-style rows are the way to go.

  • The Math: Allow a 0.5m x 1m space per person. This accounts for the chair width (0.5m) and the leg room/row depth (1m).
  • The Aisle: Safety and flow are vital. You must include an aisle of 0.5m to 1m in width. For larger marquees, a central aisle is best; for smaller setups, side aisles may suffice.

Real-World Examples & Sizes

Choosing the right size depends on your specific layout needs. Here are three of our most popular categories:

4m x 8m24-30 PeopleIntimate family weddings or milestone birthdaysView 4m Range

(Note: Adding a dance floor, bar, or buffet station will reduce these seated capacities. We recommend sizing up if you plan to include these features.)
