Powering Your Party: How Many Amps Do You Actually Need?

9x18m Traditional Marquee with Lighting and Flooring
9x18m Traditional Marquee with Lighting and Flooring

Planning an outdoor event is incredibly exciting. You’ve picked the perfect marquee, sorted the guest list, and chosen a killer playlist. But then comes the sudden realization: How are we going to power all of this?

Between the catering team demanding enough electricity to run a small village, the DJ’s massive sound system, and the hundreds of fairy lights you want draped across the ceiling, it’s easy to short-circuit under the stress.

Don’t panic. You don’t need a degree in electrical engineering to get it right. Here is a simple, stress-free guide to calculating exactly how many amps you need to keep the party glowing, the music pumping, and the food hot.

The Golden Rule: Watts, Volts, and Amps

Before we look at appliances, we need to understand how power is measured. Think of electricity like water flowing through a hose:

  • Volts (V): The water pressure. In the UK, standard domestic mains power is always 230V.
  • Watts (W): The total amount of energy an appliance uses.
  • Amps (A): The speed of the electrical current flowing through the wire.

To figure out how many Amps a piece of equipment draws, you just use this simple formula:

$$\text{Amps} = \frac{\text{Watts}}{\text{Volts}}$$

The Quick Cheat Code: Because our UK voltage is roughly 230V, a good rule of thumb is that 1,000 Watts (1kW) equals roughly 4.3 Amps. For safety and easy math, most event planners just round this up to 4.5 Amps per 1,000W.

The Main Event: Common Power Culprits

Not all event equipment is created equal. Anything that creates heat uses a massive amount of power. Anything that creates light or sound uses surprisingly little.

Here is what typical event equipment actually draws:

1. The Caterers (The Power Hogs)

Caterers are notorious for eating up the lion’s share of your power. If they are bringing commercial electric ovens, hot cupboards, or coffee machines, you need to look closely at their specs.

  • Commercial Catering Oven / Combi Oven: 3,000W – 6,000W (13A – 26A)
  • Hot Cupboard / Bain Marie: 1,500W – 3,000W (6.5A – 13A)
  • Commercial Coffee Machine: 2,500W – 3,000W (11A – 13A)

2. Sound & Entertainment (High Impact, Low Draw)

A massive DJ setup or a 5-piece live band looks and sounds like it requires a mini-substation, but modern amplifiers are incredibly efficient.

  • Standard DJ Setup & Speakers: 1,000W – 1,500W (4.3A – 6.5A)
  • Full Live Band PA System: 2,000W – 3,000W (8.6A – 13A)
  • Dancefloor Effects Lights / Lasers: 300W (1.3A)

3. Lighting & Ambience (Practically Free)

If you are using modern LED lighting, you can string up hundreds of meters of lights without breaking a sweat. Old-school tungsten bulbs, however, require a bit more respect.

  • 100m of LED Fairy Lights / Festoons: 100W – 150W (0.5A)
  • LED Up-lighters (per 8 lights): 200W (0.8A)
  • Old Halogen Floodlight (Avoid if possible!): 500W (2.2A each)

Adding It All Up: A Real-World Example

Let’s say you are hosting a marquee wedding for 100 guests. Your power checklist looks like this:

EquipmentTotal WattsTotal Amps (Approx.)
DJ Setup & Moving Lights1,500W6.5A
Catering Hot Cupboard2,500W11.0A
Catering Water Urn (for tea/coffee)3,000W13.0A
4x LED Festoon Strands & 12x Up-lighters500W2.2A
Luxury Toilet Trailer1,500W6.5A
Total Required9,000W (9kW)39.2 Amps

Can I Just Plug It Into the House?

A standard UK double socket on a domestic ring main is typically rated for a maximum of 13 Amps (about 3,000W). The entire ring main circuit in a house usually handles around 32 Amps total before the circuit breaker trips.

Looking at our example above, 39.2 Amps exceeds what a standard house ring main can handle. If you tried to run all of that off extension leads plugged into the kitchen, the moment the caterer boiled the kettle while the DJ dropped the bass, the whole house would plunge into darkness.

When Can You Use House Power?

You can safely run a small event (under 30 Amps total) off a house if you split the load across completely different circuits—for example, running one heavy-duty extension lead from the kitchen (Ring Main A), one from the garage (Ring Main B), and one from an upstairs bedroom.

When Do You Need a Generator?

If your math pushes you past 30 Amps, or if your marquee is located more than 50 meters away from a solid building, you need a generator.

When hiring a generator for an event, keep these three tips in mind:

  • Go for “Event Spec” (Road Tow Silent): Never hire a cheap, noisy framework generator from a local tool hire shop. Your guests won’t appreciate a lawnmower engine drowning out the speeches. Event generators are sound-insulated and whisper-quiet.
  • Size Up for Safety: If your calculation says you need 40 Amps, don’t get a generator that maxes out at 40 Amps. Give yourself a 20% to 30% safety buffer so the machine isn’t running at its absolute limit. A standard 20kVA generator is the sweet spot for most medium-sized marquee events, providing plenty of breathing room.
  • Don’t Forget the Fuel: Ensure you clarify with the hire company whether the generator is supplied with a full tank of fuel and how many hours of continuous runtime that gives you.

Top Tips for a Seamless Event

  • Ask Your Suppliers: Don’t guess. Send a quick email to your caterer, band, and toilet suppliers asking: “What is your peak power draw in Watts or Amps, and what plugs do you require?”
  • Avoid “Daisy-Chaining”: Never plug an extension lead into another extension lead. It increases electrical resistance, creates a fire hazard, and causes voltage drops that can make electronics malfunction.
  • Keep Cables Dry: If cables are running across lawns, ensure all connections are housed in weatherproof boxes to prevent morning dew or a sudden downpour from tripping the system.

By taking an hour to map out your power needs in advance, you guarantee that the only sparks flying at your event are the romantic kind!
