How to Build a DIY Wooden Sub-Floor for Your Marquee

There is nothing quite like a garden marquee for creating a magical event atmosphere. However, even the most beautiful marquee can feel a little “unpolished” if your guests are tripping over tufts of grass or wobbling on uneven ground.

While professional integrated flooring systems are excellent, they can be a significant investment. If you are looking for a rock-solid, professional-feeling floor without the professional price tag, a DIY wooden sub-floor is the ultimate solution.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to transform a bumpy lawn into a perfectly level event space.

Why Build a Sub-Floor?

  • Stability: No more chairs sinking into the soft mud.
  • Leveling: Corrects slopes and dips in your garden.
  • Moisture Barrier: Keeps the rising damp of the grass away from your guests and decor.
  • The Perfect Finish: Provides a flat surface for stapling down event carpet for a high-end look.

The Materials You’ll Need

The foundation of a good DIY floor lies in two main components:

  1. The Sheets: We recommend 8ft x 4ft (2440mm x 1220mm) Plywood.
    • Pro Tip: Use Marine Ply. It is designed to handle moisture, meaning it won’t delaminate or warp if the ground is damp or if there’s a spill.
  2. The Framework: Wooden battens (typically 2×1 or 2×2 timber).
  3. The Levelers: A collection of pallet blocks, breeze blocks, or timber offcuts (chocks).
  4. Tools: A drill/driver, wood screws, a staple gun (for the carpet), and—most importantly—a long spirit level.

Method 1: The “Lay and Screw” (Best for Permanence)

This is the simplest method if you have plenty of time on-site.

  1. Pitch the Marquee: Set up your marquee frame first so you know exactly where the floor needs to go.
  2. Lay the Battens: Lay your wooden battens directly onto the grass, spaced roughly 400mm–600mm apart.
  3. Screw Down: Lay your full 8×4 sheets of ply over the battens and screw them down.
  4. Level as You Go: As you lay each sheet, use your spirit level. If a corner is low, slide a pallet block or wooden chock under the batten until the bubble is centered.

Method 2: The “Hire-Company Hybrid” (Best for Storage & Transport)

Many professional marquee hire companies use this method because it makes the floor modular and easy to move.

  1. The Cut: Cut your 8ft x 4ft sheets lengthways down the middle to create 8ft x 2ft panels. These are much easier to carry through garden gates!
  2. The Interlock: Screw your battens directly to the underside of these panels. Offset the battens slightly so that when two panels meet, the batten of one supports the edge of the next.
  3. Modular Assembly: Simply slot your pre-made panels together like a giant jigsaw puzzle. This saves hours of drilling on the day of the event.

The Secret Ingredient: Leveling

This is the part that takes the most patience, but it’s what separates a “DIY job” from a professional finish.

Using your long spirit level, check every single joint. If you find a dip, “chock it up” using breeze blocks for large gaps or thin plywood offcuts for minor adjustments. Take your time here—once the carpet goes down, you won’t be able to fix a trip hazard!

Finishing Touches: Carpeting

One of the biggest advantages of a wooden sub-floor is how easy it is to carpet.

  • Roll out your marquee carpet (available in our shop!).
  • Pull it taut across the plywood.
  • Use a heavy-duty staple gun to secure the edges directly into the wood.
  • Trim the excess with a sharp Stanley knife.

The result? A floor that feels as solid and flat as your living room, right in the middle of your garden.
