What size marquee do I need for 40 gurests?

What Size Marquee Do I Need for 40 Guests? (Complete Sizing & Layout Guide)

Planning a garden party, milestone birthday, or intimate wedding reception for around 40 people? One of the first and most crucial questions to answer is: What size marquee do I actually need?

While 40 guests might sound like a manageable crowd, getting the spatial calculations right prevents your event from feeling cramped or, conversely, overly cavernous. In our latest video, Spencer breaks down the exact dimensions, furniture configurations, and spacing rules you need to know.

The Golden Rule: Round Tables vs. Trestle Tables

When calculating marquee footprints, the type of seating you choose makes a massive difference:

  • Round Tables (Most Efficient): For 40 guests sitting comfortably at 5.6ft round tables (seating 10 guests per table), you need 4 tables in total. Because each round table requires a 3x3m footprint to allow for chairs and comfortable movement, a base seating area requires a 6x6m structure.
  • Trestle / Long Tables: Interestingly, long trestle tables are actually less space-efficient than round tables when laying out a marquee. While 40 people can squeeze into a 6x6m footprint with round tables, you will need a 6x8m structure as a minimum if you are using trestle tables.

Recommended Marquee Sizes for 40 Guests

Depending on the shape of your garden or venue space, a 40-guest seating arrangement can fit into several structural configurations:

  • 6x6m(Square layout)
  • 4x8m or 4x12m
  • 3x10m or 3x12m (Great for narrower gardens or side-return spaces)

Adding Extras: Buffets, Bars, and Dance Floors

Very few events consist only of tables and chairs. If you plan on incorporating additional features, you’ll need to scale up your marquee size:

  1. With a Buffet Table: To keep things comfortable and prevent bottlenecks around the food service area, step your size up to a 6x8m or 6x10m marquee.
  2. With a Dance Floor: Assuming your tables aren’t sitting directly on the dancing area, adding a dedicated dance floor means expanding up to a 6x12m structure.
