Planning a larger event like a milestone anniversary, corporate party, or full wedding reception for 80 guests? Doubling your guest count from 40 to 80 requires careful spatial planning to ensure there’s enough room for comfortable seating, catering, and entertainment without making the structure feel cramped or disjointed. In our latest guide, Spencer explains the exact sizing math for 80 guests, recommended marquee dimensions, and smart structural layouts when adding buffets or dance floors.

The Base Footprint for 80 Guests
When planning seated events, calculations are standardly based on 5.6ft round tables, which comfortably seat 10 people per table [00:12].
- Table Calculation: For 80 guests, you need 8 round tables [00:26].
- Space Allowance: Each 10-seater round table requires a 3x3m footprint to account for the table itself, chair clearance, and guest walkways [00:20].
- Base Marquee Size: To seat 80 people at round tables, the minimum base area needed is 6x12m [00:20].
Expanding for Catering & Entertainment
In practice, very few 80-person events consist purely of dining tables. Adding food service or a dance floor requires expanding your marquee size:
- Adding a Buffet: To comfortably fit 80 seated guests along with buffet tables and queuing space, expand your structure by a bay or two up to 6x14m or 6x16m [00:43].
- Adding a Dance Floor: If you want a dedicated dance floor (without needing to clear or move dining tables later in the evening), you’ll need a substantially larger layout—typically 6x20m up to 6x24m [00:51].
Layout Strategy: Long vs. Joined Marquees
When scaling up to sizes like 6x20m or 6x24m, single marquees can become very long and narrow, which isn’t always ideal for garden spaces or event atmospheres [00:57].
- The Twin-Marquee Solution: Rather than using a single long 6x24m structure, a far better option is joining two 6x12m marquees side-by-side using a guttering kit [01:02].
- The Benefit: This creates a spacious 12x12m square footprint. It provides the exact same square meterage, but creates a much better social atmosphere for a party and fits far better in larger lawns or open fields [01:06]!
